SPECIES DESCRIPTION

This heavy-boned breed with the pendulous lips is known for working ability, loyalty and courage. Native to Brazil, the Fila Brasileiro's origin traces to Portuguese herding dogs (which were brought to Brazil in colonial times), English Mastiffs, Bulldogs and Bloodhounds. The Fila is an unsurpassed guardian, cattle driver, jaguar hunter and police dog.

This breed is loyal and eager to please. The natural pacing gait, athletic build, short coat and strong swimming ability, coupled with a tolerance for extreme climates (hot or cold), gives Filas great versatility. Natural aversion to strangers, a high territorial defensive drive and an intense spirit demand early socialization and firm obedience training.

All color combinations are allowed, including brindle, with the exception of entirely white dogs. The coat is short and dense, requiring only weekly brushing. Males stand 27 to 29½ inches, with a minimum weight of 110 pounds; females are a little smaller. The Fila is a rare breed in the United States.
